The One by Copper Coffee (Issue 7)

Navigating The Subscription Box Revolution

A Google search for "Subscription Box" will generate 704,000,000 results. There is an endless amount of subscription services out there, but which ones actually create value for users? I would argue that physical product subscriptions only make sense for products that are 1) used frequently (every day) 2) used consistently (same amount each use), and 3) things that you never want to run out of.

Subscription products that make sense:

  1. Razors – Dollar Shave Club and Harry’s led the subscription box revolution. Razors hit the first two criteria – used frequently and consistently – and can be an inconvenience if you ever run out.
  1. Toilet Paper – My uncle sent me an article about a toilet paper subscription company with high demand during the COVID-19 pandemic. I thought it was a joke at first, but after more thought, I realized it is a quintessential subscription product. Toilet paper is used frequently and consistently, and is certainly something you never want to run out of.
  1. Coffee (I’m sure you saw this coming) Coffee is the ultimate subscription product. Most coffee drinkers consume the same amount of coffee every day so it is easy to predict consumption. Additionally, coffee is likely the highlight of your morning. It can completely throw off your day if you run out.

Our goal with our subscription service, Copper One, is to optimize convenience and freshness. We ship coffee every two weeks because it is easy to determine how much coffee you need — one bag every two weeks = one cup of coffee per day. The other reason is to ensure you are always drinking coffee that is fresh. It is easy to buy coffee in bulk but it will only stay fresh for a few weeks.

The idea is once you order, you never have to worry about buying or running out of coffee again. And if you ever need to make updates (extra bag, skip an order, etc.) just give your Coffee Guy a ring.
